Rowan University is a comprehensive state-designated research institution with approximately 14,000 students. Its main campus is located in Glassboro, N.J., 20-miles southeast of Philadelphia, and it has a branch campus and medical school in Camden and a second medical school in nearby Stratford. Rowan is only the second university in the country to offer M.D. and D.O. medical-degree granting programs. The School of Osteopathic Medicine has a faculty practice plan that serves approximately 200,000 patients throughout Southern New Jersey. The institution is also home to the South Jersey Technology Park, which fosters the translation of applied research into commercial products and processes. Its business incubator also supports that mission. The University boasts eight colleges--Rohrer College of Business and colleges of Communication and Creative Arts, Education, Engineering, Graduate and Continuing Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, Performing Arts, and Science and Mathematics—and has been called upon by the state to create a College of Health Sciences.
The Department of Physics & Astronomy and the newly established School of Biomedical Sciences at Rowan University invite applications for a joint tenure-track assistant professor position in the area of biophysics or biomedical physics. We seek outstanding candidates who will be able to contribute to the development of new interdisciplinary curricula and research initiatives in the Biophysics program in the Department of Physics and Astronomy (College of Science and Mathematics) and the Translational Biomedical Sciences program in the School of Biomedical Sciences. The appointment is split equally between the two programs. The successful candidate will have the opportunity for collaborative multidisciplinary projects with other departments in the sciences, engineering, and emerging programs of medical education and research at Rowan University including schools of allopathic (www.rowan.edu/coopermed/) and osteopathic (www.rowan.edu/som/) medicine. Applicants with a background in experimental photonics applied to biomedical systems are strongly encouraged to apply.
The Department of Physics & Astronomy currently consists of 10 faculty members, a laboratory coordinator, and an instrument coordinator. The department serves over 130 physics majors who have access to have ten active research facilities that foster student/faculty collaborative research including labs for magnetics, material physical property measurements, thin film fabrication, microscopy, biophysics, laser cooling, and computational physics. The department also houses an observatory, a planetarium, and a machine shop. The recently established School of Biomedical Sciences is the multidisciplinary home for new biomedical initiatives at Rowan and currently consists of one program, a BS in Translational Biomedical Sciences (TBS). This program and the new program in Biophysics will admit their first classes of undergraduate students in F14. The TBS program is delivered by several faculty-members with joint appointments in departments within the College of Science and Mathematics.
