Rowan University is a Carnegie-classified Doctoral University (Moderate Research Activity) with approximately 17,300 students. Its main campus is located in Glassboro, N.J., 20 miles southeast of Philadelphia, with additional campuses in Camden and Stratford. The University comprises seven academic colleges and five schools—the William G. Rohrer College of Business; the Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering; the Colleges of Communication and Creative Arts, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, Performing Arts, and Science and Mathematics; the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University; the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine; the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences; the School of Health Professions; and the School of Earth and Environment—with an Honors College that spans across disciplines. Rowan is one of two public universities in the country to offer M.D. and D.O. medical degree programs. The College of Education invites applicants for the position of Assistant Professor with a focus on Urban Education and Community Studies. We are especially interested in candidates whose research and teaching explicitly addresses issues of equity, access, and social justice as grounded in theoretical frameworks that could include Culturally Relevant/Sustaining Pedagogy, Critical Multicultural Studies, Critical Race Theory, Political Economy of Urban Education, Critical Pedagogy, Intersectionality, Antiblackness, Ethnic Studies, Transnationalism/Borderland Studies, Settler Colonialism, and/or Decolonialization.  The successful candidate is expected to engage in an active research agenda in the field of Urban Education, broadly conceived, and to seek out and apply for external funding. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the new interdisciplinary MA Program in Urban Education and Community Studies, the PhD concentration in Urban Education, and an undergraduate certificate program in Urban and Diverse Learning Environments.  The successful candidate will also play a integral role in the further development of existing and new programs in urban education.

Qualifications Required

     An earned terminal degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) from an accredited institution of higher education in Urban Education or related field by September 1, 2018

     Strong, explicit commitment to educational equity and social justice

     Experience with and a commitment to working effectively with diverse students, teachers, and communities in urban settings

     Demonstrated superior communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills

     Commitment to working in an environment devoted to collaboration, collegiality, professional development, diversity, scholarly inquiry, student learning, civic responsibility, and respect for all people

     A teaching and learning philosophy consistent with the Rowan University and College of Education missions


     Evidence of a cohesive, relevant research agenda and recent publications

     At least 3 years of successful teaching experience at the P-12 level with record of successful teaching experience in urban settings

     Experience teaching curriculum, instruction, or learning environment focused courses at the college level

     Membership and participation in appropriate professional organizations

     Experience in grant writing

     Experience teaching undergraduate and graduate students

The Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Education Department is home to academic programs in reading, English as a Second Language (ESL) education, bilingual/bicultural education, Urban Education/Community Studies, and subject matter teaching (English, Social Studies, and world languages). Students in the programs represented by this department learn to consider their roles as educators in a broad context, exploring the connection and tensions that exist among schools, cultures, and society.

In the department, we work to create a community of educators who link efforts in multicultural education to social justice actions that promote social reform in the wider community through shaping educational practice, policy, and research. We foster this by creating an academic community in which democratic leadership, open dialogue, authentic collegiality, and collaboration are valued. We prepare students to serve diverse populations in formal and informal educational settings. We facilitate the study of language and literacy in conjunction with the study of the cultural, social, political, and economic contexts in which educational events and practices are embedded. Our faculty works actively to effect change through outreach to diverse communities in New Jersey, the nation, and the world.
